by Gil Gorospe

back to history page

You and your family want to move to the foreign land of America. You and your family will create a scrapbook about your experiences as an immigrant in the late 1800's and early 1900's (1880's - 1920's).

Your family: You will each take on an identity to create your fictitious family (e.g. mom, dad, daughter, son, or grandparents)

Your task:

1. You and three others will be assigned to research an ethnic group to represent (Irish, Chinese, Japanese, Germans, Italians, Scandinavian, Jewish, and Mexicans).

2. Your team will research the following information:

a. Reasons why your family came to the United States.
What was your journey over like and what happened when you arrived at Ellis Island or Angel Island.
b. What was school like
c. What kind of jobs did your family get.
d. Your Choice: e.g. the neighborhood, food, religion, family

3. With your research information you will create pictures, post cards, letters, drawings, journal entries, artifacts (ticket stub from the Ellis Island ferry?) to put in your scrapbook. You must have a variety of items in your scrapbook.

4. For each item you put in your scrapbook you must write in the significance of the item, e.g. what is the picture about, what is the significance of a post card or a paycheck stub from your first paycheck, etc.

5. You must also tell a story about your topic. Be sure to include the research information about the five topics listed above.

Other guidelines....
·You must design a Cover for your scrapbook with your names and class period.
·Introduce your family members on the first page.
·You must have at least four pages to your scrapbook (not including cover)
·Make sure your scrapbook is colorful and neat.

Resources: You will find your information in textbooks, photos, books, almanacs, atlases, encyclopedias, and the internet.
